NBS Television Senior Anchor and investigative journalist Canary Mugume has urged Uganda to take ownership of the Ankole cow as a global brand, highlighting its cultural, economic, and tourism potential for the nation.
Speaking during the Ankole Cattle Heritage and Business Dinner held on Wednesday at Sheraton Hotel Kampala under the theme, “Making Our Heritage A Global Brand,” Mugume addressed claims from international critics questioning the breed’s origins.
“I have heard people from other countries say the Ankole cow does not originate from here. Regardless of those claims, its identity remains unchanged—it is the Ankole cow,” he said.
Mugume, known for hosting Next Big Talk and NBS Face Off, encouraged Ugandans to assert ownership of their heritage.
“This is not a thing for Ankole people alone. If other entities outside Uganda can market the Ankole cow, why not us?” he added.
The dinner, attended by cattle breeders, business leaders, and cultural advocates, focused on exploring strategies for promoting the Ankole cow both locally and internationally, highlighting its economic and cultural value.
Experts say positioning the Ankole cow as a national and global brand could boost tourism, support local farmers, and strengthen Uganda’s cultural identity worldwide.
